Renting vs. Buying an Ice Machine
We did not want to guess, so we ran the numbers. We analyzed 588 certified ice machines in the EPA database and checked real August 2026 prices on six machines from three top brands. Here is what the data says about renting vs. buying.
Rent if you want low up-front cost, no repair bills, and freedom to change machines. Buy if you will run the same machine for five years or more and can pay thousands now. In our worked example, built on real 2026 prices, renting costs less until sometime between year 3 and year 4. After that, owning pulls ahead, but only if the machine stays healthy.
In August 2026, we analyzed all 588 ENERGY STAR certified commercial ice machine listings in the EPA's public database (323 unique models after removing duplicates). We also checked live retail prices on six machines from Manitowoc, Hoshizaki, and Scotsman, and pulled the current US average commercial power rate from EIA data. Every source is listed at the end of this guide.
An ice machine is a big purchase. The cheapest complete machine we priced costs $2,262. The largest costs $9,049. So the choice to rent or buy is really a choice about money, time, and risk. This guide breaks it into small parts, each with a chart.

Real Purchase Prices We Checked
Most guides give vague price ranges. We looked up live selling prices instead, checked in August 2026, so these are not estimates. The chart below shows six machines we priced at a national restaurant supplier, from a small undercounter unit to a large machine with its storage bin. The rental bar on top shows what it costs to start renting instead.

The bin surprise: Three of the six prices above are for the ice-making head only. The head makes ice but cannot store it. A storage bin adds roughly $1,500 or more, and delivery, install, and a water filter come on top. Renting skips all of these line items.
What 588 Machines Taught Us About Power Bills
Every ice machine runs all day, so electricity is a real cost whether you rent or buy. We analyzed all 588 ENERGY STAR certified listings in the EPA's database and found a clear pattern: size changes everything. Small machines burn far more power per pound of ice. The median undercounter unit uses 8.5 kWh per 100 pounds. The median large modular unit uses just 4.0 kWh. That is a 2.1x gap.

What does that mean in dollars? At the current US average commercial power rate of 13.51 cents per kWh, a machine actually making 200 pounds of ice a day at the overall median rate (5.52 kWh per 100 lbs) adds about $45 a month, or $544 a year, to your electric bill. At 400 pounds a day it is about $1,089 a year.
Here is the finding that surprised us most. Two certified machines in the same mid-size class can differ by 43% in energy use (3.92 vs 6.91 kWh per 100 lbs). At 300 pounds a day, that is $580 a year versus $1,022 a year. The exact model you get matters, not just the size.
Water follows the same logic. In the database, cube machines use a median 17.5 gallons of drinking water per 100 pounds of ice. Nugget and flake machines use just 12.0 gallons, about 31% less. If you are choosing an ice type anyway, see our guide to types of ice.
Why this matters for rent vs. buy: You pay the power bill either way. So when you rent, ask the provider for the exact model number and look up its kWh rating. An efficient rental machine can quietly save you hundreds a year, and it narrows the gap with owning.
Monthly Cost and Who Pays for Repairs
People think a machine they own has no monthly cost. That is not true, and the care bills are bigger than most owners expect. Ice is a food, so a machine must be cleaned two to four times a year. Filters need changing. Parts wear out. Published commercial repair guides put a single service call at $300 to $1,200, and major repairs like a compressor at $800 to $2,500.
A full-service rental works the other way. The provider folds cleaning, service, and repairs into one flat rate. The diagram below shows who pays for what.

So the real monthly cost of owning is the care and repair bills spread across the year. The real monthly cost of renting is the flat rate.
The Break-Even Point, Built From Real Prices
This is the heart of the choice. Renting costs a little each month, so the total climbs in a straight line. Buying costs a lot at first, then care and repairs after that. Where the two totals cross is the break-even point, and we built the example below from prices we actually checked.
Here is our example, using real numbers. Buying: the $3,588 Scotsman head we priced, plus about $1,500 for a bin, is roughly $5,100 to start, plus about $900 a year for maintenance visits, filters, and small parts. Renting: a typical mid-size full-service rate of $200 a month, or $2,400 a year, with repairs included. Power costs are left out because you pay them in both cases.

Break-even moves earlier if the machine rarely breaks. One $2,500 compressor repair pushes it past year 5.

A simple estimate for comparison only. It adds your upkeep to the purchase price and assumes the rental rate covers upkeep. It leaves out resale value, financing, energy, and taxes.
The key risk: The buy line looks lower after year 3, but that assumes no big failures. Published guides put major repairs at $800 to $2,500, and one of those can erase years of savings. What You Get Back If You Sell
Owners often count the machine as an asset, but the used market says it is a small one. A machine you own can be sold later, yet dealer price guides show the recovery is small. A used undercounter unit that cost $2,000 to $4,500 new typically sells for $600 to $1,500. A used modular head that cost $3,500 to $8,000 new brings $800 to $2,500. Working from the midpoints of those ranges, a used machine recovers only about 25% to 35% of its new price.

What this means: If you buy a $5,000 machine and sell it in a few years, expect to get back around $1,500, not $3,000. Factor that loss into any rent vs. buy math you do. Renters skip this problem, and they can also swap sizes as needs change.
When Renting Makes More Sense
The data points to a clear profile for each path. Check which card sounds more like your business.
Rent if
- You need to keep cash free for other costs.
- You are new and demand may change.
- You want repairs and cleaning handled for you.
- You need the machine for under three years.
- A surprise $800 to $2,500 repair would hurt.
- You may need a bigger or smaller size later.
Buy if
- You will run one machine for five years or more.
- Your ice need is steady and easy to predict.
- You can pay $2,262 to $9,049 up front.
- You have a service tech or plan you trust.
- You accept getting back only ~30% at resale.
- You want the lowest cost over a long life.
If your business is stable and you plan to stay put past the 3-to-4 year break-even, buying can be the cheaper path. If your cash is tight or your future is less certain, renting protects you and keeps things simple.
Costs People Forget to Count
The sticker price is only part of the story. Here is what our numbers add to the picture.
- The storage bin. Modular heads do not store ice. Plan on $1,500 or more for a bin, based on the head-plus-bin combos we priced.
- Install and delivery. A bought machine needs a water line, a drain, and the right power. This can add a few hundred dollars.
- Water filters. About $99 per cartridge at the price we checked, changed roughly every six months. Call it $200 a year.
- Electricity. From our database analysis: $272 to $1,089 a year depending on how much ice you make, and up to 43% more if you pick an inefficient model.
- Downtime. If an owned machine is down, you buy bagged ice until the $300 to $1,200 service call happens.
- Resale loss. Expect back only about 25% to 35% of what you paid.
